During exploration, optimum well trajectories can be planned by avoidance of formations liable to faulting or fracturing.  During drilling, Geomechanics is essential to understand the response of formations to avoid stuck pipe problems or to predict safe mud weights based on pore pressure modelling.  

 

Following drilling, understanding the stability of the wellbore helps to mitigate against risks of rock falling into the well over time.  Top Seal analysis is essential to understand the long-term production of a reservoir against the risk faults/fractures developing as hydrocarbons are produced and pressures change and evolve over time.
